Beyond Job Boards: Expanding Your Recruitment Channels

Amanda Reyer Mar 25, 2025

Job boards like Indeed and ZipRecruiter are valuable resources for finding candidates, but with many positions on large job boards being flooded with applications, job seekers are exploring a wide range of platforms to discover their next career opportunity.

Check out a few of the alternative platforms we use to reach candidates at more effective touchpoints in their journey.

Social Media

With access to massive pools of people, social media platforms have become a space where recruiters and candidates connect through comments, direct messages, and engaging content. Building a strong social media content strategy, focused on showcasing your culture, sharing career opportunities, and highlighting your employer brand allows you to reach both active and passive candidates.

Many platforms, like LinkedIn and Facebook, feature job feeds and/or offer job posting capabilities or job slots for purchase, making it even easier to connect candidates directly to open roles.

Additionally, social media offers the opportunity to involve your employees in promoting career opportunities and sharing authentic insights into your workplace culture. By leveraging these platforms, companies can expand their reach, strengthen relationships, and attract top talent.

Google

This is your bottom-of-the-funnel platform, where candidates are actively searching for jobs like yours. They are ready for a change. They are searching for a new career or opportunity that will excite them. All you need to do is appear when they are ready to click.

On top of that, Google’s Display Network continues to develop and refine audiences so you can reach passive candidates as well. Have your recruitment ads show up where your candidates are - whether they're catching up on YouTube, checking scores on ESPN, browsing Cosmopolitan, or reading their local news. Utilizing Google’s media allows you to spread your reach even further while reaching both passive and active candidates.

Discussion-Based

Sites like Reddit and Quora (and even Glassdoor) offer unique opportunities to connect with potential candidates in ways that many recruiters may overlook. The first is through advertising, which can target different audiences through communities, topics, questions or others.

Another way is by engaging in relevant communities, answering industry-specific questions, and contributing valuable insights, recruiters can build credibility and establish relationships with top talent.

These platforms provide a way to identify subject matter experts and tap into niche talent pools that may not be actively searching for jobs but are highly qualified. Thinking outside the box and leveraging these discussion-based platforms can give recruiters a competitive edge in sourcing and attracting the right candidates.

Niche Spots

Niche sites attract passionate, engaged professionals who actively contribute to their field. For example, there is Stack Overflow or GitHub for developers, IEEE for engineers, or ihirenursing.com for nurses.

These sites give you direct access to people with the exact skills you need so they should not be overlooked.

Industry-Specific

You know your industry, but have you thought about advertising in it? Take restaurants for example. There are sites such as Nation’s Restaurant News, Restaurant Business Magazine, and QSR Magazine that you read through but are you promoting your career opportunities there? Display ads on sites like this will help increase awareness of your employer brand.

We all know the challenges of navigating the ever-changing recruitment market and expanding your search to include more niche platforms means you can meet your candidates where they already are instead of hoping they’ll stumble upon your job listing.
